This book, to me, is about a battle between love and ego, and the consequences we face when we let our ego win. The protagonist, Brindabon was separated from his wife by his father at a very young age but as he grows up, he realizes that what his father did was wrong and tries to win over his wife’s heart. But her pride is very much wounded by the insults inflicted on her and her family by her father-in-law. And the story is about whether Brindabon would be able to win her back or not. And halfway through the story, we also see Bridabon as a dedicated teacher who gives free education to the poor kids in his village. His philosophy is if you want to help the poor, you need to accept them the way they are and not question their prejudices. You can’t be judgmental of their way of living if you want to make a true connection with them.
