He was also a fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, calligrapher, music composer, graphic designer, and film critic. Pather Panchali (1955) was Ray’s first film. Pather Panchali won eleven international prizes, including the inaugural Best Human Document award at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. Ahhhhh…. what can I say… Can anyone read something written by Satyajit Ray and not feel satisfied? I have read so many of his books now and this writer never seems to disappoint me. Admirers of Ray tend to follow his writings on a film like a manual, but this book is a memoir of Ray’s film-making days, esp. those days when he had been busy creating movies that get classified as Children’s films. It is a fresh & unpretentious book, full of charming anecdotes and memories. Highly recommended. As assumed from the title, this book is about the behind scenes of the movies directed by Satyajit Ray. It’s a collection of a few incidents that happened during the shooting. It felt like I could visualize everything. Such great is the writing style of Satyajit Ray! While reading it I was smiling to myself sometimes, and sometimes I felt embarrassed thinking about the awkward situations in the set. The way he had to struggle making those movies stunned me! All the actors and the side-actors, everyone had to struggle along with him. The lack of money, lack of a good set, lack of a good camera or lighting, lack of all the facilities the modern movies get nowadays, yet he succeeded in producing some of the best Bangla movies of all time. No matter how many obstacles he faced, he figured out a way to solve it. He simply never gave up! Who has this much passion! There’s so much to learn from this man. So much.
