Jakhan Choto Chilam Book Review
Jakhan Choto Chilam By Satyajit Ray is another autobiography written by Satyajit Ray. Satyajit Ray was a famous Indian filmmaker and author of the 20th century. Satyajit Ray was born in Calcutta city and he was a Bengali Brahmo family member. After meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and viewing Vittorio De Sica’s Italian film Bicycle Thieves, Satyajit Ray was attracted into independent filmmaking. Ray directed 36 films. These films were including feature films and documentaries. Satyajit Ray was also a fiction writer, illustrator, publisher, music composer, calligrapher, film critic, and graphic designer. Satyajit Ray created Feluda, the sleuth and the scientist in his science fiction stories, Professor Shonku is popular fictional characters.
Now I write my opinion about Jakhan Choto Chilam book by Satyajit Ray. I relished Jakhan Choto Chilam book. Jakhan Choto Chilam was written by Satyajit Ray in Bengali. His wife Bijoya Ray translated Jakhan Choto Chilam into English. This book is divided into two parts. The first one dealing with his childhood. The Second portion devoted to his movies. A Satyajit Ray film I don’t remember when watching.
I am well learned by all Satyajit Ray popular films like Pather Panchali, Aparajito, Byan something. How were some tricky scenes shot? The first part of Jakhan Choto Chilam was fascinating. The second part much more so. This book would be a real deal to all Bengali and non-Bengali fans alike. My only lament is that the book ended somewhat abruptly and the title is not very accurate as half the book describes his life as a director.
Why has Jakhan Choto Chilam book been titled as Childhood days? In fact, there are two parts in Jakhan Choto Chilam book. The first part describes the childhood days of the filmmaker Satyajit Ray which is roughly about 80 pages. The second section is about 85-90 pages. Pather Panchali, Goopy Gane Bagha Byne, Sonar Kella, Joy Baba Felunath & Aparajito gets highlighted films of Satyajit Ray. The compensative feature of Jakhan Choto Chilam book is apparently the details about the lesser-known actors like Kamu Mukherjee.
How Ray tackled royalty or the swelling crowds, how often to shoot a particular sequence Ray had to wait for a how he improvised on sequences like in ‘Goopy Gayne Bagha Byne’ wherein a particular sequence Goopy & Bagha were transported from a snowy land to a desert which Ray filmed in a reverse mode with Goopy & Bagha actually falling from a tree and when played in reverse it appeared they jumped up and landed on a tree finds its way into the book.
